In a world where overfishing is becoming an increasingly pressing issue, some people are beginning to ask if plenty more fish is really completely free. The answer, as it turns out, may be a little more complicated than simply throwing away our fishing nets and declaring the sea free of fish. In fact, according to a study published in the journal Science Advances in February of this year, there may actually be plenty more fish out there that we don’t even know about yet. The study’s authors used data from satellite imagery to estimate the number of fish in various parts of the world’s oceans. They found that there are an estimated 1.4 billion more fish than previously thought living in areas that were previously considered “fully exploited.” This means that even though we’ve been catching and killing off large numbers of fish for years now, there may still be plenty more available for us to catch if we only knew where to look. ..
